Now that I am a mom to a very energetic 9 month old, the thought of getting out of bed earlier than I need to, is right up there with staying up past 11PM... It ain't happening! Gone are the days of putting on a face, sipping a hot latte and enjoying fluffy pancakes in the sunshine. If I'm able to shovel in some muesli with my hair in a mom-bun and Baby Shark on repeat, it's a good start to the day!
On my birthday, my husband wanted to take me for breakfast and I had to decline. I needed to join Ren for his 9AM nap because we were in the depths of sleep regression / teething. "Brunch would be better", I said. While we napped, he researched and sourced a fabulous brunch spot in Shimo Kitazawa area called, Sunday Brunch.
Cafe culture in Japan is a work in progress. It has become more popular over the last few years so I wasn't expecting much but I was blown away. Up a few stairs we were greeted by the friendly staff and welcomed into a large open-plan cafe. The main aesthetic being wood, concrete and greenery - I die!
We both decided on the special plate set so we could enjoy a bit of everything and we received:
Arrabiata spaghetti- I usually never order pasta at a restaurant because I think I can make better versions at home but this was really good!
A smorgasbord of pates, cured meat and veggies.
Dessert - I opted for the berry tart and it was berry nice and my husband ordered the gateau chocolate tart - which was also delicious,
Drink - we both opted for coffee...duh!
We were so impressed with the food and experience. Ren had his lunch in his highchair and fell asleep just as our brunch arrived. It was the perfect the perfect day!
The Shimo Kitazawa branch is quite popular so aim to be there before the mad rush. It filled up quite quickly after opening and there was a steady pace of people coming and going. You won't only find me here on a Sunday...You'll possible find me here on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday too.
UPDATE:
After posting this, I went back and had to try the French Toast and it didn't disappoint. Soft, fluffy baguette drizzled with cream and maple syrup. I mean, what more could you want?!
